Hey friends!
I gotta say, it's a small miracle I've managed to write this week amidst the excitement at Wimbledon. I'm giving myself a little pat on the back for making it happen. đŸ
In the world of YouTube, Claire and I published a new video where I explain the two types of meditation practice. Iâve found this framing helpful to make sense of the smorgasbord of styles out there. Hope you like it!
Letâs get to this week's idea. Â
Inspiration is Action
Iâve spent a lot more time thinking about starting things than actually starting, but recently thatâs begun to change.
The shift happened as I realized that my idea of inspiration wasnât entirely accurate with reality.
In my mind, âinspiration strikesâ and then action occurs. Itâs like the metaphor of a lightbulb going off in your head, followed by a burst of fervent and passionate work.
In reality, I think that model of inspiration is only accurate 20% of the time. In most cases, itâs entirely inverted.
To understand what I mean, let's listen to the multi-talented director, screenwriter, producer, and musician Robert Rodriguez, who explains it well:
âEven if I didnât know what to do, I just had to begin. For a lot of people, thatâs the part that keeps them back the most. They think, âWell, I donât have an idea, so I canât start.â I know youâll only get the idea once you start. Itâs this totally reverse thing. You have to act first before inspiration will hit. You donât wait for inspiration and then act, or youâre never going to act, because youâre never going to have the inspiration, not consistently.â
This idea seems counterintuitive, but itâs inherent in the creative process. Creative professionals understand this, but it's lost on the rest of us.
Don't get me wrong, I still find moments of complete inspiration that elicit action. But it's most often the case that beginning the work is what allows inspiration to arise.
Sometimes the recipe is simple, even if it isn't easy.
We need to sit ourselves down, block out distractions, and face the empty page, screen, canvas, or whatever our medium is.
Itâs showing up, putting in the time, and allowing inspiration to come when sheâs ready.Â
What are you waiting for?
